about

OSING TRANCE, recorded in Temenggungan Village, Banyuwangi, East Java Indonesia in December 2015. "Musik Patrol" is a style of bamboo gamelan ensemble. As you can hear, the rhythms are played at a breakneck speed with fascinating shifts in phasing.

The region around Banyuwangi is particularly fascinating from a cultural perspective. As Islam spread across Java, Banyuwangi was the last major enclave of Hinduism before the island of Bali, which is only a few miles across the sea. Even though the region became "officially" Muslim there has always been a continuation of certain practices and beliefs from the pre-Islamic days, and that continuity remains dramatically in the musical styles still performed there. The rapid rhythms and phasing are definitely more in line with what you might expect from a Balinese gamelan, but there is still a kind of Javanese "roughness" in the attack and accents. The overall feel is quite different. The people of this region are Osing, a different ethnic identity than either Javanese or Balinese, with their own language and cultural traditions.

The group "Banyuwangi Putra" is considered a regional favorite. I'm told they have won many contests in Java and are often in demand to perform at many different kinds of cultural festivals and other events.

OSING TRANCE is one of my favorites in the "UNHEARD INDONESIA" series documenting my collaborations with Indonesian musicians during my travels. If you download the full album you will also get to hear a few recordings of a children's gamelan that performed earlier the same day. I would like any Indonesian listener to be able to download the album for free. If you're living outside Indonesia and make more than $500 in one month please consider making a donation for the download as I've invested a considerable amount of my own money to finance both my travels and the editing of these recordings.
