Part two of the "Piano Trance" series is dedicated to the benefit of Timouns Art School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. ALL funds raised from downloads of this music will go directly to the art school which struggles to exist under extremely difficult and violent circumstances due to the political instability and gang warfare which makes normal life impossible in Haiti. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere was once the richest land in the entire world, exploited endlessly since the very beginning of the colonial era and the slave trade that ensued.
The recording was made on May 23, 2023 after consuming a handful of Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata that I had harvested a year after inoculating the mycelium underneath a hundred year old black walnut tree. I felt the medicine start to kick in gently at first as I walked along the forest path from the Organic Farm to the Communications Building at the Evergreen State College, where I like to go to use the piano rehearsal rooms as often as I can. I saw the breathtaking beauty of the golden sun shine its beams through the translucent green tree leaves, reminding me of an experience I had almost thirty years ago in this same forest that taught me how to completely reconsider the ways I had been listening to and working with sound. I sang along with the birds and the gentle breeze as I walked, receiving heart affirmations from the ground I walked upon.
Entering the private piano room and closing the door with the lights down low, this album dictated itself to me in its entirety as I played without pause for the 43 minute duration of this recording. "Piano Kebyar" is dedicated to the fierce Barong spirits of Java and Bali in gratitude for both the protection and abundant mischief they provide to their communities. "Slit the Throat of the Slavemaster" is dedicated to the heartbreaking struggle of the Haitian people to gain enduring freedom from the shackles of slavery, colonialism, and the ongoing exploitation both from other nations and from those who spread evil within their own society. May Haiti be FREE!
The album as a whole is especially dedicated to my dear brother Love Leonce, who runs the Timouns Art School in the shantytowns of Port-au-Prince. He works with the belief that providing young people with the transformative experience of art-making will help deter them from the temptation to join the violent gangs that cause only robbery and death in their own communities.
If you wish you can also donate directly through his GoFundMe as well.
