In 2011 I began the "Unheard Indonesia" series to document the different types of collaborations I engage in with the incredible musicians I meet and work with throughout Indonesia. Over the years, I've often received requests to share some of the rare cassette treasures I find on my travels. Dare I say, this is the one cassette that literally started it all. Before ever going to Indonesia for the first time, I was looking for the incredible trance-inducing sounds of "Kuda Lumping", also known as "Jathilan" or "Jaranan" and a host of other names. I initially found this recording on Madrotter's blog and so I knew what I would be setting out to look for upon my first arrival to Java. I bought dozens of Jathilan cassette tapes at Popeye Music in West Yogyakarta, and to my surprise, one of the first tapes I played upon returning home was the very same tape I had first heard on the Madrotter blog.

This is a "campursari" or "mixed" style of Jathilan- you'll notice the propulsive backbeat provided by a Western style "rock" drum kit, and some of the lyrics are taken from popular radio hits of the time. That doesn't diminish one iota (I feel it rather enhances over all) the power of the trance-inducing and ultimately sacred nature of the music itself.

I hooked up a cassette player to a CDR burner and later did my own EQ and mix & master of the music you hear. In fact, this might be one of the most "hi-fi" versions of this cassette that has ever been heard!

This music is NOT for profit of any kind and I make no claims of ownership. I only share these cassettes because this music is so important to me, and it is basically next to impossible to find this cassette today, so even many music lovers within Indonesia are unable to enjoy this music unless it is shared through an accessible online platform such as bandcamp.
